143 imagesThe Women Farmers of Rural Thailand. This story, the photographic essay, is about women. Farming is important, obviously, but farming is a day job, only part of the complicated lifestyle of the women I document. The women are mothers, grandmothers and wives and often the head of the household. Often while working in the fields, which is incredibly hard work, they bring their young children or grandchildren with them so they can take care of these youngsters while farming the fields. Most of the women I document are older. Working in a physicality difficult environment, at a time in their lives when women living in more affluent countries are enjoying retirement. The younger women, are either rearing babies or working in cities where they can earn substantially more than they can on the farm. The men are also working at Jobs in the larger cities, and commute home on the weekends and holidays.
